Biogas production (anaerobic digestion, biomethanation) is a biological process, in which micro-organisms produce biogas (methane and carbon dioxide as main components) under controlled conditions in closed reactors. Biogas can be produced from all anaerobically biodegradable organic material. Anaerobic digestion has been traditionally used in sewage treatment plants for sludge stabilisation. More recently, applications have been implemented for treating municipal solid wastes, industrial wastes and manures.
